PAPER WEAVING

Pre-cut strips are ideal for weaving projects. Here is a helpful method for getting started. With a paper cutter cut stips of Skycraft paper to 1/2 inch. They do not Have to be uniform. Any width can be woven. Have several colors ready.

Method 1: On a piece of card stock, lightly pencil in the area you want to cover with woven paper. Use a plastic right angle tool to be sure you get things square. Put a line of double stick adhesive tape along one edge. Line up the pieces that will form the "warp" or first rank of strips.

Now put line of the dry adhesive along the edge perpindicular to the first one. lift alternate warp pieces and slide in your first "weft" strip. Push it to the edge that is taped and secure the end to the second line of sticky tape. Be sure the strip is lined up true to the first tape line. Continue until the space is filled. Apply glue or paste under the woven strips to secure them to the card stock.

Method 2. Use Wonder Under heat fusible sheeting (from a craft or sewing store) to adhere your paper strips. (This is available at sewing stores.) Pencil in your right angle lines on a piece of card stock. Cut a piece of Wonder Under as big as you want to weave and heat fuse it to the card stock. Remove the release backing.

You can use the sticky tape secure the first row of parallel strips. Go ahead and weave the entire piece and adjust the strips.

Cover with release paper or white paper and with your iron, heat fuse all the strips down to the card stock.

At this point you can use the woven piece as is, just for framing or you can cut it into smaller pieces.

Try die cutting this kind of heat fused weaving for use in jewelery or cards. You will want to tack down the loose paper ends with a glue pen before going ahead with the various uses for woven shapes. These pieces can be laminated as pins, or they can be coated with Eurotex epoxy for a shiny, professional look. This is a two part liquid and may be tricky to use. Judikins DiamondGlaze is clean and easy to use for sealing projects. Cut the finished piece into shapes and use for pins or earrings. Edges may be painted metallic with Marvy markers.

For a quilt look use wide paper strips for weaving and rubberstamp and emboss the small squares in the finished piece for a miniature quilt.

Twill weave: Weave over two, under one. Doing this one way gives an interesting design, and yet another design if you do it both ways.

Diamonds: Begin with starting lines that are not perpendicular but more like the large angles in a trapezoid.

Miniature weaving: It takes a lot of time and skill to weave 1/8 inch pieces, but the result is wonderful for earrings and pins. Glue to mat board and seal.
