Marbled Papers, Endpapers, Handmade Decorative papers, Bookbinding Papers

SKYCRAFT DESIGNS, INC.

Here are samples of Skycraft paper styles. These do not represent available stock but you may ask us for patterns similar to these numbered samples. We continually make new editions of these in various colors and usually have 300 or so assorted papers in stock. We always have new patterns and the newest are not yet pictured here. We use lots of iridescent and interference pigments, and they do not show up well in the digital images, but we hope the pictures can give you a good preview of what the papers are. Expect glowing gold, copper, reflective blue, purple, green, red as well as the regular palette of artist's colors. Of course we make traditional colorations too, and are often asked to do imitations of antique papers.

These are handmade papers, NOT printed or machine made papers. When you see them you may think "these are so perfect, surely they are printed." Not so. Every single sheet is hand painted or patterned by Peggy Skycraft or Jack Townes, using some very complex specialty techniques all done with custom mixed wet paints.

1 . Combed Marbled

These are the familiar traditional bookbinders papers. We produce them in several patterns and a multitude of colors. We have ready stock at all times and the quickest way to order is to ask us to select an assortment for you. You may send color samples to assist us in finding the right colors. We can produce these combed papers in the colors you need - minimum order is ten.

2. Stormount or Stone Marbled

These are sprinkled patterns which have one or two vein colors and one or more "foreground" colors. The foreground can be plain tone or a fine netting. There may be other colors sprinkled on as a finish of tiny spots.

3. Shell Marbled

These are similar to the Stone, but feature a texture of small spots each having a shaded aurora. The "shell" name refers to their resemblance to certain types of architectural stone which reveal tiny fossil shells on the polished face

4 . Cosmos Marbled.

A two step process makes these a very rich surface. The papers are first given a multicolor background by sprinkling color on the wet surface. They are dried, coated with marbling fixative, pressed and finally are marbled with a free flowing pattern in metallic and colored lines.

5 . Frost

We have two variations of this. One features solid opaque background with a frosty sprinkled pattern in pearl or metallic paint. The other is a colored but transparent first layer with the same effect in one or more metallics, also resembling frost patterns. This one can be very soft and romantic looking .

7. Galaxy

Here the colors are thown to spread out on a thickened but transparent base color. The result is more patterned and not so blurry looking. These may also have brushed on swaths of other colors in thicker or thinner gel which results in complex surface patterns. Last is a sprinkling of metallic paint which texturizes the whole surface.

8. Paste Grain

Paste grain is simply colored paste spread on the paper, with combed designs made by using flat combs, old-time decorators "graining combs". The most interesting of these are my elegant Brocade variations which consist of two layers, the first a plain combed color, followed by a combed pearlescent or metallic paste. Some of our paste papers are softer edged with a spattering of multicolors, which we call Grateful Dread papers, as they look somewhat like tie dye. These are popular with added glitter. There are variations to all of these, such as a primary layer of wax crayon, which shows through all layers to add a subtle multicolor effect

9. Hammered Metals

Hammered metals are simply one layer of metallic paint, with a sprinkled application of a clear paint which becomes a mottled spot pattern revealing the background paper color. These can be made very faded and pale, or very bright , depending on how much pigment we put in the mix. These are very appropriate for wall coverings. We make these in 40 colors.

10. Zippy

These papers are a combination of media and painting techniques, utilizing a first step of rubbed wax patterning and lines and motifs drawn with my specially formulated oil pastels. The papers are then painted with various types of plain and metallic mixtures and more dynamic paints are spattered on for the textural effects. These are very fancy surfaces and take more hand work than some our other papers.
